Chair's Report 2003

John H Sheard MBE – Chair – Holbeck Elderly Aid

Dear Friends of Holbeck Elderly Aid

I wish to advise you that our year-end accounts for the period 1 April 2002 to 31 March 2003, were examined by our Independent Examiner Rachel Rothwell of Rothwell & Company Chartered Accountants, and were accepted as a true record of our financial affairs, by our Board of Director's at our Company AGM on the 14 July 2003.

I wish to thank our Director / Company Secretary Robert Benn for all his hard work from 1996 to November 2002, particularly as in his own career, he has been promoted to Managing Director of the Company for whom he works, with all the additional responsibility that goes with this well earned promotion.

My thanks are also extended to Alderman Chris Myers. Chris is a Director and Vice- Chair of HEA, and I appreciate all the hard work she has undertaken for our charity. Her knowledge of charity matters is fully utilised during our monthly Committee Meetings.

All our Committee Members are dedicated Volunteers, who spend much of their time helping the elderly residents of Holbeck enjoy a better quality of life. To each individual Volunteer I extend my thanks for your continued support.

Our Trips' Sub-Committee must not be forgotten. Due to their efforts a steady variety of social outings are arranged throughout the year for our residents. Well done and keep up the good work in the coming year.

Last but not least, I mention our Project Co-ordinator Mr B S Garewal. Being a boating man I quote a nautical phrase “Without a good helmsman a ship soon becomes list.” Sonny is our helmsman steering HEA through the reefs of bureaucracy and similar hazards to ensure that our aims and objectives to improve the quality of life of the older people of Holbeck are adhered to. On behalf of the Directors and Volunteers of HEA, I wish to thank Sonny for all his very hard work. He has worked for long hours to meet deadlines for fundraising, and other requirements, including some of my own. Without his enthusiasm and dedication, HEA would not have made such a variety of services available to all our members.

Let us not forget our dear friend and Volunteer Befriender Ernest Moss who carried out visits to older isolated people from 1994 to 2003. Sadly Ernest suffered an illness and has gone into a nursing care home. We are very proud of him and shall remain indebted to him for his dedication to others.

Once again, I have pleasure in thanking the President, Secretary, and Committee of Holbeck Working Men's Club for their kindness in supporting HEA, and in particular, allowing us to use their Concert Room for our Easter Bonnet Parade. This event was well supported by our members and helped improve our financial balance.

As each year comes to an end, and our membership increases, we see more and more older people of Holbeck supporting our activities and enjoying the services provided for them by HEA.

Yours sincerely

John H Sheard MBE – Chair – Holbeck Elderly Aid
