Annual Report 2003

John H Sheard MBE – Chair – Holbeck Elderly Aid

Dear Friends of Holbeck Elderly Aid

I wish to advise you that our year-end accounts for the period 1 April 2002 to 31 March 2003, were examined by our Independent Examiner Rachel Rothwell of Rothwell & Company Chartered Accountants, and were accepted as a true record of our financial affairs, by our Board of Director's at our Company AGM on the 14 July 2003.

I wish to thank our Director / Company Secretary Robert Benn for all his hard work from 1996 to November 2002, particularly as in his own career, he has been promoted to Managing Director of the Company for whom he works, with all the additional responsibility that goes with this well earned promotion.

My thanks are also extended to Alderman Chris Myers. Chris is a Director and Vice- Chair of HEA, and I appreciate all the hard work she has undertaken for our charity. Her knowledge of charity matters is fully utilised during our monthly Committee Meetings.

All our Committee Members are dedicated Volunteers, who spend much of their time helping the elderly residents of Holbeck enjoy a better quality of life. To each individual Volunteer I extend my thanks for your continued support.

Our Trips' Sub-Committee must not be forgotten. Due to their efforts a steady variety of social outings are arranged throughout the year for our residents. Well done and keep up the good work in the coming year.

Last but not least, I mention our Project Co-ordinator Mr B S Garewal. Being a boating man I quote a nautical phrase “Without a good helmsman a ship soon becomes list.” Sonny is our helmsman steering HEA through the reefs of bureaucracy and similar hazards to ensure that our aims and objectives to improve the quality of life of the older people of Holbeck are adhered to. On behalf of the Directors and Volunteers of HEA, I wish to thank Sonny for all his very hard work. He has worked for long hours to meet deadlines for fundraising, and other requirements, including some of my own. Without his enthusiasm and dedication, HEA would not have made such a variety of services available to all our members.

Let us not forget our dear friend and Volunteer Befriender Ernest Moss who carried out visits to older isolated people from 1994 to 2003. Sadly Ernest suffered an illness and has gone into a nursing care home. We are very proud of him and shall remain indebted to him for his dedication to others.

Once again, I have pleasure in thanking the President, Secretary, and Committee of Holbeck Working Men's Club for their kindness in supporting HEA, and in particular, allowing us to use their Concert Room for our Easter Bonnet Parade. This event was well supported by our members and helped improve our financial balance.

As each year comes to an end, and our membership increases, we see more and more older people of Holbeck supporting our activities and enjoying the services provided for them by HEA.

Yours sincerely

John H Sheard MBE – Chair – Holbeck Elderly Aid

Holbeck Elderly Aid -
Annual Report 2006
For the period 1 April 2005 - 31 March 2006
Funded by Leeds Social Services, The Neighbourhood Renewal Fund &
The Church Urban Fund
Chair’s Report

We are very grateful to the Neighbourhood Renewal Fund and the Church Urban Fund for funding the posts of our Volunteer Co-ordinator, Neighbourhood Support Worker, and our Activities Organiser.

These posts have enabled the charity to capacity build and cope with the increasing number of people accessing our services.

We would also like to thank Leeds Social Services for funding the post of our Project Manager - Sonny Garewal.

I would like to thank Sonny for his dedicated service to HEA. I understand that this is his eleventh year serving the older people of Holbeck.

We must also thank Lesley

Thornton, who visits isolated older people in their own homes and carries out assessments of need, as well as recruiting, training and supporting volunteers.

Lyn Minskip has set up various activities throughout Holbeck , for older people, and this has helped to alleviate social isolation and loneliness. We thank Lyn for this.

Thanks also to all the 43 volunteers, without them it would be impossible to deliver all the work the charity does in the area.
Last, but not least, my thanks go to the Board of Trustees and the Management Committee of HEA, who have given of their time freely, and made valuable contributions to the design, planning and implementation of the various schemes run by HEA.

This year we have seen another increase in the demand for services provided by the charity. Every week we receive requests from older people for help in various forms.

We are quite unique in that being a “grassroots” organisation, based in the heart of the community, we can respond quickly to needs.

New Fully Adapted Offices
We have successfully acquired and adapted new
offices for HEA. This was in
response to the growing needs of our Service Users,
and volunteers. Our existing one-room office was insufficient to house everybody, and did not allow for
confidentiality for Service Users requiring help.
We will be moving to 123 Holbeck Towers, Holbeck, Leeds LS11 9NH, on 4 September 2006!

Holbeck Elderly Aid -
Annual Report 2007

For the period 1 April 2006 - 31 March 2007 (Reg. Charity No: 1075934)
(A Company Limited by Guarantee & Registered in England & Wales - Company No: 1075934)

Welcome friends to another fast moving and vibrant year at HEA! Again this year has seen an increase in the demand for our services, by older people living in Holbeck.

Every week we receive requests from older people, and both statutory and voluntary agencies for help in various forms.

We are quite unique in that being a “grassroots” organisation, based in the heart of the community, we can respond quickly to needs.

However, in April 2006, we were disappointed to learn that our application to the Neighbourhood Renewal Fund (NRF), had been rejected, and this initiated a funding crisis for HEA, as NRF was being sought for our Workers’ posts.

Our Strategic Development Manager - Sonny Garewal and our newly acquired Funding Strategist - Terry Jacques came to our aid with an approach to the Henry Smith Charity and the Tudor Trust, which was successful.

We are very grateful to them for funding the posts of our Volunteer Co-ordinator, Neighbourhood Support Worker, and our Activities
Organiser.

We would also like to thank Leeds Community Foundation for the help and support they gave us through this very difficult and stressful time.

Thanks are also due to Lloyds TSB Foundation who helped to fund the gap between these applications being approved.

These posts have enabled the charity to build on existing progress made, and cope with the increasing demand for our services.

I would also, like to thank Leeds Social Services for their ongoing support and funding, and I would like to congratulate them on the success and positive impact that the Neighbourhood Network Schemes have had throughout Leeds, in supporting older people to live independently in their community.

I’m sure that they are fully aware of the pressure these schemes alleviate from local offices of the Department of Social Services, and the cost benefit to the SSD as a whole.

I would like to positively encourage Policy Makers within the Primary Care Trust (PCT), to look at the enormous amount of preventative work that the Neighbourhood Networks do, and to encourage them to follow the example set by SSD, in funding this important yet unquantifiable work.

We must also thank Lesley Thornton, who visits isolated older people in their own homes and carries out assessments of need, as well as recruiting, training and supporting volunteers.

Lyn Minskip has set up various activities throughout Holbeck , for older people, and this has helped to alleviate social isolation and loneliness. We thank Lyn for this.

Thanks also to all the 43 volunteers, without them it would be impossible to deliver all the work the charity does in the area.
Last, but not least, my thanks go to the Directors, Board of Trustees and the Management Committee of HEA, who have given of their time freely, and made valuable contributions to the design, planning and implementation of the various schemes run by HEA.

Holbeck Elderly Aid -
Annual Report 2008

For the period 1 April 2007 - 31 March 2008 (Reg. Charity No: 1075934)
(A Company Limited by Guarantee & Registered in England & Wales - Company No: 3657728)

Welcome friends to another busy and vibrant year at HEA! Again we have seen an increase in the demand for our services, by older people
living in Holbeck and the surrounding area.

We continue to receive requests from older people, and both statutory and
voluntary agencies for help in various forms. As we are a “grassroots” organisation, based in the heart of the community, we can respond quickly to needs.

IT Suite Development
The development of the IT Suite at St Matthew’s Community Centre did not go ahead, as costs were far too great and we could not cope with the capacity to handle such a large project at this time of high demand and growt. However, we choose to work in partnership with a local project called Hitbase, which provides an IT facility at St Luke’s Church.h of our existing services

We refer people to Hitbase, for Community learning courses, and provide fully accessible transport to and from the courses. Working in partnership with Hitbase, HEA has helped develop new skills for people in the community and contributes directly to the Government’s Diversity Agenda, and to the Leeds Initiative’s - Narrowing the Gap Agenda.

All these benefits are additional and complimentary benefits that the charity indirectly brings to this deprived area, in addition to the vast and responsive array of services that it continues to meticulously provide to the older people of Holbeck. In this way Holbeck Elderly Aid has a real and positive impact on the whole Holbeck Community.
Future Plans
Having moved to our new offices on the ground floor at Block 3 Holbeck Towers, we have outgrown the office space within a year!

Also, it has been announced that all the high rise flats in the local area are to be demolished by 2010! We have been busy helping older people with the move as well as trying to find new accommodation for the charity! We are exploring various options and the Directors and Sonny Garewal, will duly prepare their recommendations to the Board of Trustees and the Management Committee.

We would like to thank Sally-Anne Greenfield and Carlos Chavez of Leeds Community Foundation for the help and support they have continued to give HEA in it’s development, growth and capacity building.

I would also, like to thank Leeds Social Services for their ongoing support and funding, and I would again congratulate them on the success and positive impact that the Neighbourhood Network Schemes have had throughout Leeds, in supporting older people to live independently in their community.

I must re-iterate to Policy Makers within NHS - Leeds, to look at the enormous amount of preventative work that the Neighbourhood Networks do, and to encourage them to fund this important, yet un-quantifiable work.

We must also thank Sonny Garewal, Lesley Thornton, Kieran Jagpal, Maureen Vollans and all Volunteers for the vast amount of work they continue to deliver for the charity, week-in week-out!

Last, but not least, my thanks go to the Directors, Board of Trustees and the Management Committee of HEA, who have given of their time freely, and made valuable contributions to the design, planning and implementation of the various schemes run by HEA. - John H. Sheard MBE
